Herd in action
The following set of pictures shows a remarkable sequence of events at the Mankwe hide. A herd of around 60 elephants where deep in the water having a fantastic time, and in the middle of the dam, either deliberately or by accident a baby elephant, which clearly couldn’t stand was almost crushed and was left stranded as the larger elephants played with each other. The sequence of events shows the elephants playing, the baby elephant stranded, and then when the Matriarch realized something was amiss she angrily approached the water and trumpeted madly. A younger elephant sensing what was happening proceeded to walk out to where the baby was stranded and gradually and slower brought it back to shore safely - another few minutes and this baby may have drowned. The last pictures shows the anxious family members waiting for the little one to join them and after a quick reunion, all was well and they wondered off into the bush. Amazing to witness such an event.
